Optimized mobile-first web applications

Now, while the corona crisis is raging in all its intensity, it is hard to imagine recruiting new staff. Until recently, however, it was a major challenge for restaurants and cafes to find suitable staff and thus maintain their service level. A possible solution for this is digitization, whereby restaurant visitors, for example, order and pay for themselves. But how you do that, without compromising customer friendliness and customer experience, is still quite a challenge. At restaurant app MyDish they have every confidence that it is possible. With LINKIT UX design as a "secret weapon". 

### Order via smartphone
Simon Bosschieter, the initiator of MyDish, formulated the idea in February 2020 when he went out to eat sushi in Amsterdam. “You could order your food there yourself via an iPad. A nice idea, but I did not have an overview of the menu, which was then on a printed version. Also, I had no idea what the rest were ordering. Of course it is inconvenient to work with a device that many others have also been using during the coronavirus pandemic. I missed the interaction and realized that this could be done much better.” 
 
### MyDish
“That is how I came up with the idea of MyDish. A restaurant app with which you can order and pay via your own phone by scanning a QR code. Especially when it is busy, customers often have to wait a long time for this. And with corona it is also very nice that waiters do not have to walk past the tables. Via the app you can also see what your table companions order, you can easily split the bill and even receive a receipt. Ideal for the Dutch! ”

### Looking for digital help
Arne Kleijn and Tim Jongen, both owners of restaurant  'IJver' in Amsterdam, had already researched the possibilities of an app for their restaurant three years earlier with several partners and other restaurant owners in Amsterdam. Was it possible to make the business easier for the owners in that way? They soon found out that creating such an app requires an enormous amount of investment in effort, time, money and expertise. Nobody offered it and a suitable product simply could not be found at the time.

### Lockdown
Fast forward a bit, the lockdown struck us and the need for such an app became not only feasible, but almost essential. How do you ensure that you limit the number of customer contacts as much as possible? Tim decided to visit companies again with the same group to see if there was a suitable app on the market.

### Match
Simon: “On a deserted King's Day I walked past Tim's closed restaurant, who I still knew from the past. When I saw his closed restaurant, I decided to pitch my idea to him.''

Tim was very enthusiastic about the concept of MyDish, and one thing led to another. More people joined in and we asked developer Vincent van Doesburg to come up with a Proof of Concept (PoC) to investigate whether the app was technically feasible. After the PoC we realized such an app was indeed doable, feasible and in fact made a lot of sense, given the overall environment created by the coronavirus. Following from that, LINKIT stepped in to develop the MVP (Minimal Viable Product). From there, MyDish took off.

### Charlotte steps in
That was also the moment that UX-designer Charlotte Postma from LINKIT started working with MyDish. “As a UX-designer, I actually represent the role of the customer during the development process,” she explains. “And in the case of MyDish, that's a dual role, representing both that of the customer (restaurant owners) and that of the guest. I try to make sure the user experience is the best it can be, especially before the app is launched.

 ### The easiest route
In itself it seems obvious, but it is not according to Charlotte. “The ideas often arise from the needs of the business and "should" really be implemented that way. Although the idea may be good, inconsistencies can arise at the level of detail, making user-friendliness sometimes hard to determine precisely. The same goes for the developers. Often they really think of the interests of the user, but when things get complicated on a technical level they are sometimes tempted to choose the easiest route. It is up to me to monitor the user experience, while also remaining sensitive to the underlying (technical) discussions.”

### There's work to be done
At MyDish everyone wanted to prevent a bad user experience. Charlotte: “The basic concept of the app, in the form of the PoC, was already complete when I arrived. The first thing I do is simply see what I think of it from a user perspective. Do things make sense? Is the app intuitive? There are almost always things that are not (yet) ideal. At MyDish, the buttons were not in the same place on all pages in the beginning and the consistency and experience were not yet fully realized. That is of course not a good idea, so I started with trying to improve that.”

### Double testing
The next step in the UX process is testing. Lots of testing. At MyDish this was an extra challenge because there are not one but two user groups. Charlotte: “You have an interface for the guest who uses the app to order, but also one for the restaurant owner who has to process the orders. Both are equally important for a successful outcome. This was a nice assignment for me because I had to test twice. ”

### The Business Importance of UX
Simon underlines the importance of UX from his point of view. “Catering and retail entrepreneurs are often of the mourner type. They are constantly working to please guests, which makes quality extremely important. If something works well then they embrace you and if it doesn't work right immediately then they don't need you. There is therefore not much room for errors. Both the restaurant visitor and the guest should really see MyDish as a hospitality app that has added value to them. An app that can be used in all types of catering industry environments. From a simple bar to a Michelin star diner, and even for large events. People often want to celebrate something and the experience is very important. With MyDish you compete with the waiter, so to speak. The user-friendliness must therefore be top and UX design is very important for this.”
 
### "Extension" of the cash register
The restaurant owner should not be stuck with an online order list after ordering, which he or she then has to type back into the POS (Point of Sale) system. MyDish is therefore integrated into the POS system, so that everything is automatic and the restaurant can focus more on hospitality than entering manual entries into the register. Simon: “This essentially makes MyDish an extension of the POS system, as it were. Almost all POS voice providers were enthusiastic about this as it relieves them from extra manual work. In fact, many of them think MyDish is groundbreaking.”

### User testing
The importance of Charlotte's work is therefore not to be under-estimated, which is precisely why  MyDish gave her every opportunity to propose improvements. “We are now in the final phase before the MVP (Minimal Viable Product) is ready and that includes the really serious user tests. During such a test, Charlotte follows the behaviour and the resulting choices of relevant test subjects, to determine what can be improved and how. 

### Test and improve
“At MyDish it's paramount that restaurant visitors easily roll through the ordering process. Is it immediately clear how to order? What about settling the bill - is that clear? By continuously testing, improving and testing again you can continue to improve the experience. In the last major user test, the process went virtually flawlessly.”
 
### The proceeds of UX
“From the perspective of the restaurant owners, I did encounter several points for improvement. As an example, it is better to use the word "table" instead of the word "session", which is common in IT. In the final checks, testers were found to be confusing the main and sub-categories of the menu without realizing it. Then you have, for example, main dishes as the main category with subcategories such as burgers or wraps below. It happened too often during the test that the side dish items were presented as the main category, so there was still some work to be done. These are small things, but we want to do it perfectly, and it is precisely with UX optimization that you get these kinds of points sorted out before the roll-out and deployment.”
 
### Especially for the startup
“Of course you can go live without UX,” Charlotte concludes. “There are still plenty of companies going that path, but I wonder if that will be a success story. You can only leave a first impression once. If it is bad, you have lost that opportunity. That is why UX is especially important for small companies. Large companies often still have a well-known name that attracts people. Startups, such as MyDish, rely on quality from the -get-go., and without proper UX in mind, that is difficult to achieve. ”

It might sound like a ridiculous question; if you have a form on your website and you would like people to submit some information, should you have the submit button in green or in red? The thing is, it really isn’t such a ridiculous question. In fact, it’s a decision which can seriously affect the number of leads you will get through this form. So let’s find out what the best option is, and even more important, how to discover it with these three tips! 
 
### 1.	Small changes can lead to great outcomes 
 
To discern between red and green you have to carry out an A/B test. It works as follows. You present the form with the green button to a random audience, called group A and check what they do. You present the form with a red button to another random testing group, called group B. After a few weeks of testing you find out in group A (green button) 30% decided to click the submit button, while in group B (red) this was 40%. Clear evidence red is the best color. 
 
So it seems, these decisions can potentially lead to big differences. Colors, figures, numbers and sizes, they all do matter in our subconsciousness. The decisions we follow while designing or ordering a website will emerge based on assumptions we make. But how do you know these assumptions are really true? Only by performing A/B testing.  
 
### 2.	Test till you drop
 
If only changing the color of one button can lead to a significant change, how much can you achieve if you investigate all buttons, all figures, all numbers and all content on your site? Probably a lot. Many companies invest a lot of money on ads and SEO to attract visitors, but forget to invest in converging them to clients. Again, the best tool to achieve is by performing A/B testing.  
 
So, second tip, don’t just test before and just after you launch your website, but keep on doing it. A/B testing should be part of your daily rhythm, if you are (un)lucky enough to be the responsible marketeer. Also, the current online market is definitely not a stable one. Preferences can change overtime. The results of a test from three years ago may not be reliable anymore over time. So, when you’re finally done testing all 216 buttons on your website. Don’t forget to start testing them all over again.  
 
### 3.	Duration
 
The final tip! You might have guessed you need a testing audience big enough to extract a valid outcome from your test. If your test group only consist of five people and four of them accidentally really love red because it reminds them of the red roses they bought yesterday for their spouses, you have a problem. The best way to tackle this issue is duration. The longer your test lasts, the more reliable the outcome is. When you notice in week 6 the outcome is hardly different than the one from week 4 and 5, you can be pretty sure you have a solid result.

A/B testing like a pro? You can do it, with these three tips!

Not everything that looks great on paper is still that good in reality. This certainly counts when developing websites, webapplications and more. In order to certify his or her progress a developer must constantly perform tests. Luckily most of this can be done automatically nowadays, except the most important thing: the test itself. 

### Triple testing 
Testing a webapp mostly occurs in the three layers you can see in this pyramid: unit testing, integration testing and UI testing (end to end).

- Unit testing makes sure a submit button for example actually works as a button. It just tests one simple function, to make sure it is coded the right way. 
- However, when you have an online form, you may also want to check all the required fields are filled in before you can send it after pressing the submit button. Testing a combination of functions like this is called integration testing.  
- The final form of testing tries to copy real human behavior. It tests every single function of the form and every step connected to it. Every single field, every way of filling it in, sending the file and even receiving the automated thank you letter afterwards. 

### Test automation saves time
You can imagine having to do all of this manually takes a lot of time. Luckily there are many applications nowadays that can be used to automate these kind of tests. (Want to read more about [test automation](https://leapwork.com/test-automation)?) On average this decreases the total amount of spend time by 36 percent. A significant amount. It also helps to ensure a new piece of code will not break down the whole app in testing mode, because it is automatically tested before being accepted. 

So, having a ‘stresstest’ for your webapp is definitely a necessity when building one. It will cut a lot of developing time and prevents faults in coding to break your app. 

### Building the test
However, this is not the end of the story. There is one thing that definitely can’t be automated and which requires a lot of knowledge and experience: building the test itself. 

### Understanding all factors 
To give an example. If you want to replicate real human behavior, you of course will need to know how your target audience will act. An older person for example, acts in a different way than a younger user and requires a different approach and user experience. When you’re building a test, there are many factors like this you have to note. 

### The data issue
Next to this testing the ‘pipelines’ of data flowing from the server to the frontend and reverse can be challenging since often the testdata is different than the real stuff. This can corrupt the test results. Making sure the test mirrors real user behavior is clearly not a simple task and requires a lot of insight and experience. 

### Smart investment
So if you want to be sure your webapp will function as good as possible, than go the full mile. First ensures your progress is being tested. Continuously. Secondly make sures this is done automatically to save time and finally, don’t cut on expenses and time building a matching test. Don’t forget this test will serve you longer than just the building time. Also, when updating and upgrading the app it will definitely prove its value.

How to properly test your app? If you want to be sure your web app will function as well as possible, then do unit, integration en unit interface testing.

Why just stresstesting your webapp is not enough!

Why should development teams prioritize development of apps and services for mobile before desktop? Simply put, the majority (52%) of users these days will be using a mobile device for web browsing, vs 42% who will use a desktop computer. Additionally, 40% will only use their phones for searching. 
It is therefore important these days to prioritize the development of mobile versions of an app before focusing on the desktop version. Although that sounds easy enough, the reality is that this is not always the case, and the reasons are nuanced. 

### Easy results go first
It’s probably part of our human nature  to always strive for easy results. Often this is fine, but not when you’re developing a website. In many ways, both for developers and clients, the desktop version has many benefits. The pages are bigger, so the result is visually more attractive. Functionalities are relatively easy to design and to implement. Besides, at desktop size it’s easier to be creative and come up with out-of-the-box solutions. For developers this means developing a desktop website first is the easiest way to please their bosses. 

### From desktop to mobile 
However, when this awesome looking desktop site is ready, it’s often very difficult and costly to create a mobile version which is at least just as awesome. Screens are much smaller and instead of using a mouse, you use your fingers , leading to a whole new approach to user experience. In many cases the outcome is just not as good as the desktop version. 

To really put mobile first, you  have to develop mobile first.  Don’t design a great looking website for desktop with the idea you can easily convert it into a mobile version - rather aim for the best possible user experience on mobile first and then focus on desktop. 

### Putting mobile first
In order to achieve a mobile-first approach you might need to dig deep in your organization. The mobile first strategy should be adopted all over your organization, both in business as in development. The best option is to make this happen is to have an ‘ambassador’ for mobile in your development team. Their job is to prioritize mobile during the whole trajectory of designing and development. They also make  sure the best of your resources, time, energy and creativity is put in developing an awesome mobile website. 

 In the end there is a big difference between a mobile site which is  good and one which is  excellent. Small changes in design and functionality can lead to massive changes in audience behavior, increasing the business value of your website, simply because you choose to put mobile first!

Despite the fact that people are reading less, the book market continues to perform rather well. This is partly due to the fact that the online choice is enormous and you have unique possibilities via a webshop to "link" people to a book. For online book and media seller BookSpot, both aspects, choice and personalization are therefore extremely important. To bring these aspects back even better, the company decided to redevelop the front end of its e-platform to a large extent with the help of LINKIT.

### The challenge
The idea of the platform economy is that scale leads the pack. The larger the offer, the better. It was therefore extremely important for BookSpot to also offer their large, decades-old catalogue of media online. This would significantly increase the offer on the webshop. From having books only they now offer music, games and movies.

To support the strong growth of BookSpot, the new platform, which runs on Intershop, also had to become more user-friendly, scalable and easier to manage.
What made the assignment challenging was that the legacy platform had to keep managed and continue operating  while the new one was being built.

### The solution:
JavaScript developer André Teixara was one of the LINKIT experts who contributed to this assignment. In total, more than 25 specialists worked on the new BookSpot.

The first phase of the process that he started with was disconnecting the front-end application from e-commerce platform Intershop. This created more flexibility and it was easier to manage the old application.

### Expansion of capacity
At the same time, another team went to work on the new front end as well as upgrading Intershop. By working in parallel, visitors were still able to place orders on the old site, while the APIs were expanded and adapted to new needs. The capacity of the new platform, plus the associated pipelines, has also been adjusted so that the new app can handle millions of requests per day. In this way it was ensured that the platform can grow with the success of BookSpot.

### Stack modules
The main stack used was ReactJS. With this stacking of modules, which work according to the principle "first in first out", it is possible to deliver them quickly and clearly, while they are also easy to manage. In addition, Webpack was used to optimize the code and content and to deliver it quickly.

Finally, André and his team have minimized the number of external links. Those who remained are only called if anything is required.

### Satisfied with the result
Converting a sailing ship was an interesting challenge for André. He is very satisfied with the parallel working method and the commitment of the different teams. By working Agile it was possible to keep the communication lines short and clear. Feedback could also be processed so quickly. The new tech stack is now optimally deployed, making the project more than successful.

### Ready for the future
It was a special moment for both BookSpot and the developers when the new front-end was switched for the new one, all at the touch of a button. Not only is their range of entertainment offerings now much greater, the user-friendliness has also improved considerably, especially in the field of search, ordering, payment and delivery. Now, BookSpot is ready for the future. And it may come sooner than expected. There is now a whole waiting list of new features ready for development that will make ordering a book or a movie even easier and more fun.

Expanding e-commerce capacity

More entertainment with the new BookSpot webshop

You would say that there is little digital work as a mechanic. It is best to turn keys, bolts and nuts with actual tools. Nevertheless, the digital revolution at KLM has also reached this department. The new iMech app gives mechanics a digital toolbox that has permanently changed their work in a positive way.

### An additional digital toolbox

In addition to a real toolbox, mechanics now also receive a tablet with them to take to their workshop. This allows them to perform a multitude of tasks a lot easier. Much of their work is completed for them through so-called tickets. Every ticket represents a task. Normally, mechanics would have to walk to a computer, log in, and then indicate that they tightened that one bolt, nut, or screw. Extremely important in the aviation world, because without a 'go ahead’ the aircraft cannot be used.

Here too, time is money. Mechanics can use the app on the tablet to indicate directly on the work floor when they have completed a task.

However, it does not stop there. Manuals can also be conjured up via iMech to perform complex operations. If the mechanic finds out that a colleague also has to do something, he or she can enter it immediately.

### Önder Ceylan

In short, the app makes the work of the mechanic a lot easier. For the developers of the app, on the other hand, it was quite a job to build such a versatile app. Full-stack developer Önder Ceylan from LINKIT worked for KLM on the app as a lead application developer. He was responsible for both the delivery and the training of his colleagues in both the new techniques and the agile working method that was applied.

### Broad team

“We worked on this with two teams,” Önder explains. “It included app developers, API developers, information analysts, business analysts, a product owner, a KLM mechanic, testers, designers and more. So a whole club together, which indicates how extensive this app is. ”

### Build an app in a hangar

A special detail was the place where the app was built. As Önder explains: “When you build an app for mechanics, it is of course very important to get as much input from them as possible. Otherwise you will never do it right. To optimize this, we worked in a hangar, right next to the mechanics' workplace. That way we were very close if we had any questions. In addition, a mechanic was part of our team who constantly shared feedback, plus new requests from the team. ”

### Ionic

“The main technique we used was Ionic. A hybrid mobile apps framework built on Angular and Cordova. Ionic helped us to shorten development time and was also a logical choice because it is based on well-known and proven web technologies such as JavaScript, CSS and HTML, which everyone in the team can handle. Finally, the Ionic framework made it possible to use the app on multiple platforms and devices.

### Test methods

“Testing was, and always is an important part. We performed both user and e2e tests using Jasmine and Protractor. These working methods are also trusted and make the lives of our developers a lot easier as they can program in a much more targeted way, based on the test results. ”

### Great importance for KLM

In addition to the pressure of programming itself, the pressure was even higher due to the enormous importance of the app for KLM. iMech is part of a broader digitization program of the airline in which the working methods are digitized and automated as much as possible.

### The worried mother

Önder: “It was clear that, like the rest of the program, iMech is extremely important. Operations kept a close eye on our progress, like some kind of concerned mother. The change in working method is inevitable. Digital is the future for KLM. At the same time, of course, it is crucial that these new apps perform and do exactly what they were designed to do: make work more effective and efficient. ”

### Lots of freedom and responsibility

“It was especially cool for me to carry out such a project with the Agile approach -that is without cumbersome rules or restrictions on our way of working or our preference for technology. We were given the freedom to make choices as a team and thereby work together optimally. Although this increased responsibility, it also created a great sense of satisfaction once the app was ready. ”

**Big Data Expo:**
“Big Data Expo is het eerste platform waar vraag en aanbod uit de big datasector elkaar ontmoeten. Het is het enige evenement in de Benelux dat zich puur en alleen richt op alle facetten van datamanagement. Daarom kunnen wij met trots zeggen dat dit hét event is als het gaat om big data.

Wij focussen enkel op het inzetten en laten renderen van big data. Je vindt exposanten die elke dag weer, op verschillende niveaus, met producten en diensten op het gebied van collecteren, genereren, analyseren, optimaliseren en/ of toepassen van big data bezig zijn. Dit zorgt er voor dat we diepgaande informatie kunnen bieden."

Op 15 september zijn we aanwezig bij dit externe event georganiseerd door AG Connect. Dit is een dag vol toffe Low Code en No Code presentaties en werk sessies. 

**AG Connect:**
"Low code en no code stellen meer mensen in de organisatie in staat om eigen apps te bouwen, wat de druk op IT kan verlagen. Bovendien kunnen apps met low code en no code sneller ontwikkeld worden. Belangrijk is wel dat er goed wordt nagedacht over de plek van de technologie in het IT-landschap. Een nauwere samenwerking tussen business en IT is daarbij noodzakelijk."

**Een complex engineerings- en calculatieproces in een gebruiksvriendelijke applicatie: van design sprint naar low code app**  
Deze sessie wordt je aangeboden door onze experts;* Jonathan Wigmans*, UX Designer & *Maaike Stoops*, Solution Advisor

Bij de ontwikkeling of verduurzaming van een gebouw komt veel kijken. Welke systemen komen erin, en in welke combinatie? Miljoenen combinaties van mogelijkheden maken het ontwerp en de configuratie een tijdrovende en foutgevoelige klus. ModuleMakers klopte daarom bij LINKIT aan voor de automatisering van hun engineeringsproces. In een gezamenlijk team ontwikkelden zij de tool die het hele traject, van product engineer tot salesafdeling, stroomlijnt. Een design sprint gaf de nodige inzichten en bood het ideale startpunt om met behulp van low-codeplatform OutSystems in 10 weken een prototype en applicatie te ontwikkelen, die aansloot bij de behoefte van de gebruikers en die het engineeringsproces 20x sneller maakte.

Maaike Stoops en Jonathan Wigmans vertellen over de uitdagingen in dit project, de learnings van de gekozen aanpak en waarom de combinatie van design en low code zorgt voor ijzersterke en razendsnelle oplossingen voor (op het eerste gezicht) complexe processen. Je leert hoe je in een week van business probleem naar gevalideerd prototype komt.


**Supercharged app development met OutSystems**  
Deze werk sessie wordt gegeven door *Mohammed Ezzarfani*, OutSystems Developer  
Bouw een to-do app in 30 minuten

In deze demosessie laten we je ervaren hoe makkelijk en snel je apps kan bouwen in OutSystems, met weinig tot geen kennis over softwareontwikkeling. Als demonstratie van hoe eenvoudig dit wordt gedaan, gaan we samen met jouw input een ‘To Do’-app maken, waar allerlei taken worden toegevoegd en afgerond. Dit laat dus zien hoe je snel en simpel kan innoveren. Jij bepaalt samen met ons het resultaat van deze app. De sessie is interactief en we bouwen samen op basis van jouw input. De kennis die je tijdens deze demo opdoet, kun je zelf meenemen naar jouw bedrijf en laat een deel van het potentieel van OutSystems zien.
